Justinian and the Roman Law

Justinian and the Roman Law

Murals Room 352

Justinian, Roman E1nperor, gave the world the first codification of civil and crin1inal law. The code Justinian antedated English common law, and is the basis of the modem legal systems of Continental Europe. Many of its principles have followed into English and American law.

Justinian is depicted presiding over a trial in a Roman Court with the Scriba, or clerk reading the charges. Roman counsels, flanking the Justice on either side are thoughtfully considering the points of argument.

The colors, tiling and costumes are authentic reproductions from early paintings.
