History of the Murals for Room 352

Room 352 Bergen County Courthouse

The presentation of the roots of the body of modem American Law in the limitations of five panels presented a problem for the artist, William Winter, who with a group of W.P.A. artists was commissioned in 1933 to paint appropriate murals for the court rooms of the Bergen County Court House.

After conferring with representative members of the Bergen County Bar Association, it was determined that the five selected panels best depicted in a summary way the fundamental sources and influences that form the foundation of our law.

The panels were finally approved by the Federal and State agencies of the W.P .A., the Bergen County Board of Freeholders, and the then presiding Judge of Bergen County Circuit Court, the late Edwin C. Caffrey, and un-veiled with appropriate exercises at the December Term in 1938.
